Jaw Pain

TMJ or TMD?

The Temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are the 2 joints that connect the jaw to the skull. Issues surrounding this joint, such as pain, are consider TMD or Temporomandibular Dysfunctions.

Even though pain is felt in the jaw & during jaw movement, most cases of TMJ pain are not caused by the joint itself. Instead caused by issues in the muscles of the neck spine & jaw.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Something to consider is that the muscles of the neck spine, especially the SCM (sternocleidomastoid), become tight over time in our current seated environment. The fact that the average American sits for 50-70% of their day with that number trending upwards does not bode well for us.

IN GOOD HANDS

Chiropractors are experts in dealing with neck spine & surrounding musculature.

The average Chiropractor evaluates roughly 5,000 necks per year

making them the provider with the most hands-on experience dealing with neck spine disorders.

Treatment

Most cases fully recover with;

  • gentle chiropractic manipulation of the neck spine

  • myofascial treatment of the neck & jaw muscles

  • re-educated of proper head, neck, & jaw movement habits
